My love affair with Greece began in the early 1970’s and during the intervening years, I have returned there whenever possible to experience, what is, the Greek lifestyle! First, and foremost, the people – the food, the wine, the climate, the music – I love them all!
The magic that is the light, the vibrant blue of the sky and sea and the redness of the soil. In places, the landscape appearing unchanged since the beginning of time.
I dream a dream of retiring one day to a small holding, maybe on Crete? To that end, I find myself travelling back once again, this time for an extended budget stay of up to 6 months. Putting my real estate career on hold, I will commence my journey on 23 April 2010, departing from Wanganui, New Zealand. With a reasonable knowledge of the Greek language tucked away in the recesses of my brain and with backpack only, I will move around much of the mainland and visit many of the islands. Renting rooms along the way and catching local buses and ferries and, of course, making the most of the Greek hospitality.
Free as a bird – come follow me!
My journey never ended back in 2010. For several years following, I made numerous trips back to Greece, each time visiting my family and friends on Crete but mainly spending time with a partner on the island of Spetses.
After retiring in 2018, I returned in 2019 for 3 months of intrepid travels before global chaos caused international travel to be severely affected.
We have one life. At the end, we only regret the chances we did not take. So, excitement builds as I countdown to 26 May 2022 when I will set off on another 3 month journey throughout Greece.
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” Ralph Waldo Emerson.
That wonderful quote will always resonate and it is, therefore, with a level of excitement and intrepidation, that once again, I leave New Zealand bound for Greece on 29 April 2024, for 2 months of adventures.
